Understanding 30 Days of Biking

The concept is quite simple. You pledge to cycle, every day, for the 30 days of April – whether it’s around the block, or a 40km day-trip, it doesn’t matter – and then post your adventures online.

The idea of 30 Days of Biking started in Minneapolis in 2010, but has now spread all over the world, and it is growing year-on-year. To take part, all you need to do is make the pledge on their website, and they get out and ride your bike every day during April.

There are no other rules, as such, to taking part, except that you’re encouraged to post online to Facebook and Twitter about your daily experiences. And while you may not have amazing unique adventures every day, the mere process of getting out on your bike often does encourage you to go new places and experience new things. Also, by following what other participants are doing, you are often inspired to break with your normal routine and try something new.

Of course, the only real goal to 30 Days of Biking is to get people out and cycling, for no other reason than the pure joy of it.

I took part last year, and really enjoyed the experience, and ended up posting quite a few cycling photos of where I went on instagram.

I’ve also pledged to take part this year, and am looking for other people in Ireland to join me. So far, according to the pledge page, there are only two other people who’re joining in across the island of Ireland – so obviously, a few more would be great!
