Holiday Traffic

By | 23 December, 2013

The roads on my commute to work this morning were pretty quiet. I guess a lot of people have already finished work for the Christmas break. However, an unfortunate consequence of the empty roads was that most of the motorists were speeding, which didn’t seem very sensible given amount of standing water on the roads.

Ireland has been lashed with rain over the last few days, and the roads are very wet. The high winds have also scattered a lot of debris on the roads, blocking the drains, and so the water isn’t draining away very well.

On my way into work this morning I encountered three areas of flooding, where the standing water was across the entire carriageway. In normal Monday morning traffic, this would have been fine, because the cars would be going slow enough to spot the water and avoid it. However today the cars were going too fast to react in time, and many of them were ploughing straight into the water – and one or two of them almost lost control!
