How to Save Money when Returning Items to Chain Reaction Cycles from Ireland

The good people at Chain Reaction Cycles provide an great service to Irish customers, from their base in Ballyclare in Co Antrim.

They have a vast array of cycling gear in stock, and offer free delivery to any destination in Ireland with no minimum order value.

Unfortunately it’s not free if you need to return an item from outside the UK.  They offer a free returns service to their UK customers using a service called Collect+, which allows people to drop off return items at any one of over 5,500 locations all over the UK, and have them returned to Chain Reaction free of charge. But this service doesn’t operate in the Republic.

Irish customers south of the border have to pay their own shipping costs to return an item – which can be very pricey, and inconvenient to organise.

A Third Way

However, there is another option. You can use two services together – Parcel Motel and Collect+ – to return items.

I’ve talked about Parcel Motel before, and I’m a fan of their service. They offer a parcel delivery service which can be used for convenient collection of packages, to bypass delivery restrictions into Ireland, and in some cases save you a lot of money in international shipping costs. They have over 100 locations throughout Ireland where you can collect parcels 24X7 from their ‘lockers’ – and all for a modest fee.

In addition they also provide a parcel sending service, where you can send items from a Parcel Motel locker to any address in Ireland or the UK. But better than that, they also integrate with Collect+. They will pick up a package from one of their locations in the Republic, transfer it to their depot in Northern Ireland, and then hand it over to Collect+ who will then deliver it the rest of the way free-of-charge back to the retailer.

Personal Experience

I used this combination of Parcel Motel and Collect+ recently to return something to Chain Reaction and saved a lot of money. I had bought a pair of runners, but when they arrived they were the wrong size, and so I needed to exchange them. To have the parcel returned using An Post would have cost about €45.00, and I would have had to make a special trip to the post office. But using my alternative method, it only cost me €5.50 to send the parcel!

The returns process applies just to Ireland though if Chain Reaction Cycles deliver the wrong item, or a faulty or damaged by or cycling part, I assume there is no cost for the buyer.
