How to Mount the Moon Comet Rear Light on a Pannier Rack

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to upgrade the rear light on my Bobbin bike, and after a bit of research picked the Moon Comet.

I’ve been really happy with the light, but less satisfied with the supplied mounts. The light comes with two mounts included – one a stretchy rubber strap for the seat post, and the other a solid plastic mount to attach to the rails under the saddle – but neither really appealed to me.

The saddle-mount was a bit awkward to use, and the strap for the seat-post mount felt a bit flimsy. It never gripped very tightly, and as such the light kept moving around in transit, and I always got the impression that the rubber might snap if pulled too tightly.

What I really wanted was to mount the light on the back of my pannier rack, where it would be out of the way, and look a little bit more aesthetically pleasing.

However on my initial search I couldn’t find any official pannier mounts, and was considering this engineered solution from the Hands On Bike blog.

As I continued my online research I eventually came across a plastic bracket sold under the Raleigh name (Moon lights being made by Raleigh), the LAA885, which does the job perfectly.

It costs only 3 pounds, and was bolted onto the back of rack in a matter of moments. It holds the light solidly in place, and is a more permanent installation than the seat-post attachment.

I’m now very happy with the light, and I think the position on the rack is great.  The light itself performs very well, and is very clear. There are three solid-on modes and three flashing modes, and I find that the lowest solid-on setting (10 lumen) is bright enough for city use.

    I just got this light. It is a square mount like Cateye BUT it doesn’t have any notches at the back of the square. Instead the mounts it comes with use a notch ABOVE the light that holds it in. Your Raleigh LAA885 has the notch inside the mount, like Cateye, but no notch above.

    I tried this light with a Cateye rear rack mount that looks very like your LAA885 and it does fit, but there isn’t any notch holding the thing in, you can just pull it up and out. You have to make a deliberate effort to do it but I wasn’t convinced it wouldn’t get knocked out at some point.

    Can you pull the light out without depressing the tab?

    I don’t think the Raleigh mount you mention is designed for this light. I decided just to attach it to the back of my rack using the rubber seat post strap, this actually works fine for me so far (just got today).

    Thanks for the post in any case as I have been looking into ways of getting a rear light into the back of my rack. For now I am just using the seat post rubber strap which is not as neat as a proper rack mount but seems perfectly secure. (

      Hi Blorg – you’re correct that the Raleigh mount wasn’t specifically designed for this light. The notch doesn’t engage to lock the light in place, but in the last 6 months of use the mount has been tight enough to hold the light securely. In theory it could fall out, given a very hard knock, but it hasn’t so far.

    Recently learnt that Moon have a dedicated rack mount fitting that is lock-in: Model number is “RB-19” and is on Moon’s website. The centre-to-centre distance between the outer holes is 50mm (which I know fits Topeak racks).

    My question is: what is the centre-to-centre distance between the holes on this Raleigh mount? 50mm too?
