All Weather Cyclist

It may be raining and blowing a gale out there, but that’s no reason to stop cycling!

Lots of people leave the bike at home once the weather turns bad. They don’t like the idea of getting soaked on their way into work. But I don’t mind the wet all that much, as long as I’ve got my waterproofs with me.

I’ve got a few different waterproof jackets – a couple of cycling-specific ones, with the longer back and reflective bits – and a few normal outdoors type jackets.  A few years ago I also invested in some good quality waterproof trousers (like these) that provide great protection from the waist down. And when I couple these with a pair of gloves and a hat I’m set for whatever mother nature may throw at me.

I’ve even dabbled in the idea of waterproof shoe covers, but they’re awfully fiddly to fit over normal shoes, so I don’t normally bother – I just buy waterproof shoes instead!

My motivation to keep cycling in the wet is helped by the lack of decent public transport alternatives in my part of town, and the fact that I don’t own a car. But even driving or good public transport were available to me, I doubt whether I’d use them. I’d miss being on the bike too much!
